Young Pioneers Summer Day Camp offers multiple one-week sessions, from June to August, Monday through Friday for children age 6-12 at Dan Nagle Walnut Grove Pioneer Village.

2017’s theme is: “Kindness Rocks!” with an emphasis on being kind and respectful toward others.  In addition to learning a new way to spread kindness each week we will be making and sharing rocks in Pioneer Village’s new “Kindness Rocks Garden.”

  • Week 1: Trailblazers Week, June 12-16.
    Open Enrollment - As of 4/19/2017 only 2 spots left!
  • Learn how to use a compass and blaze a trail in the wild! Older campers learn how to be a trail guide leader. Go fishing and canoeing at Pride Lake and learn how to “read” the clouds. Travel to Li’l Mississippi Golf to play mini golf and water wars.

  • Week 2: Weird Science Week, June 19-23.
    Closed Enrollment - Full
    Be a junior archaeologist for a week! Enjoy a field trip to University of Iowa Archaeology labs for an insider tour of archaeologists at work followed by a hike to Fossil Gorge to search out fossils. Learn about the coral reef and fossils with Putnam experts. Launch a 50 foot solar bag and have fun with science crafts and games.

  • Week 3: Down on the Farm Week, June 26-30.
    Open Enrollment
    Go on field trips to John Deere Pavilion for hands-on farming exhibits and to Cinnamon Ridge Farms to see a dairy farm and animals. Have a “hand” in making a “barn quilt” for Pioneer Village and enjoy farming activities, games and crafts.

  • Week 4: Early American Sports Week, July 10-14.
    Open Enrollment - As of 4/19/2017 only 6 spots left!
    Visit West Lake Park for swimming & learn how to play disc golf. Go to Glynn’s Creek Golf Course for a mini golf lesson. Learn to play croquet, badminton, horseshoes, card games, dominos, Native American and early pioneer games

  • Week 5: Wild West Week, July 17-21.
    Open Enrollment
    Have fun with the “Trapper’s Wife” learning about the pioneer experience. Tour Pine Creek Grist Mill and hike the trails in Wildcat Den State Park. Pan for gold and be a cowboy/cowgirl. Enjoy a watermelon seed spitting contest!

  • Week 6: Nature Week, July 24-28.
    Open Enrollment
    Pet some rescue animals and earn about their care from “Down by the Creek.” Visit Scott County Conservation’s Wapsi River Environmental Education Center near Dixon, IA all day then stay overnight in the bunkhouse on Thursday July 27. Evening meal & breakfast included. Parents are welcome to attend evening meal and/or stay overnight.

  • Week 7: Native American Week, July 31 – Aug 4.
    Closed Enrollment - Full
    Join us on our field trip to Maquoketa Caves and Bellevue State Park Butterfly garden. Learn about Native American history through games and crafts.
