The built environment plays a vital role in community life by increasing connectivity and providing pedestrians access to public spaces. The SCHD offers a community at-large assessment and free technical assistance to develop or strengthen environmental changes and polices to promote physical activity, healthy eating, tobacco and nicotine free, chronic disease prevention, and leadership. SCHD works with city officials to identify areas of improvement.  

Previous community successes include: conducting a walk audit and improving sidewalk infrastructure; providing bicycle racks at parks; establishing a walking club; strengthening tobacco-free park policies; increasing healthy vending machine items and marketing.
