Permit to Carry

A Non-Professional permit to carry authorizes the permit holder to carry and acquire weapons.

*Please note that the Online Permit to Acquire website uses the following browsers: IE9 or higher, Firefox, Safari, or Chrome*

Online orders require a primary phone number and e-mail address in order to communicate the status of your order, a $50 fee, a valid drivers license or non-operator ID and supporting training documentation from a class from an NRA instructor or a long form DD-214 that states "Honorable Discharge". You will be notified via e-mail, text, or phone call whether your application has been approved or denied. As required by the State of Iowa, you must provide training documentation to receive a permit to carry a weapon. You are able to scan and submit your ID and training documentation online or bring your ID and training documentation to the Sheriff's Office.  Please note that your application will not be processed until all proper documentation is received by the Sheriff's office. Everyone applying for a permit is subject to a background check through NICS. You can use your non-professional permit as a purchase permit. For Permits to Carry the Sheriff’s Office will refund $40.00 if the applicant is denied.

You may apply in-person at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at the Scott County Courthouse, 400 W. 4th Street, Davenport, Iowa. There is a kiosk in the lobby for people to apply online in person at the Sheriff’s Office. For further assistance please call 563-326-8703.

A non-professional permit is valid for five (5) years. You need to renew your permit thirty (30) days prior to or 30 days after the expiration date.

Answer these questions to figure out if you are qualified for a Renewal or if you should fill out the New Application.

  1. Do I have or have I had a carry permit issued on or after January 1, 2011?
  2. Am I submitting my application 30 days prior to or 30 days after the expiration date on the back of my permit?

If you have answered YES to all of the above questions, you qualify for a Renewal.

If you have answered NO to any of the above questions, you do not qualify for a Renewal. You must fill out the New Application.  Certificates of training cannot be older than 2 years for an initial application for the carry permit.

A professional permit to carry authorizes the permit holder to carry weapons in connection with their employment. A professional permit is valid only while going to and from work and while actually engaged in the employment for which it is needed.
