Permit to Acquire

PERMIT TO ACQUIRE PISTOLS OR REVOLVERS

A permit to acquire authorizes the holder to acquire (purchase) pistols, revolvers, and long guns; however, this does not authorize the holder to carry a weapon. An Iowa permit to acquire pistols and revolvers is valid three (3) days after the application has been approved and is valid for five years from the date of issue (Code of Iowa, section 724.20). It is valid only in the State of Iowa.

Online orders require a primary phone number and e-mail address in order to communicate the status of your order, a $25 fee and a valid drivers license or non-operator ID. You will be notified via e-mail, text, or phone call whether your application has been approved or denied. You are able to upload and submit your identification online or bring your drivers license or non-operator license to the Sheriff's Office.  Please note that your application will not be processed until all proper documentation is received by the Sheriff's Office. Everyone applying for a permit is subject to a background check through NICS. The Sheriff’s Office will not refund any money for applications denied for Permit to Acquire.

You may apply in-person at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at the Scott County Courthouse, 400 W. 4th Street, Davenport, Iowa. There is a kiosk in the lobby for people to apply online in person at the Sheriff’s Office. For further assistance please call 563-326-8703.
