Tobacco-Free QC

Tobacco-Free QC

The Tobacco-Free QC exists to change the culture of our community regarding tobacco use and exposure through:

  • Preventing the start of the use of tobacco
  • Promoting cessation of tobacco usage
  • Decreasing availability of tobacco products, and
  • Influencing tobacco related legislation

Why smoke-free is important:

  • Secondhand smoke is a Class A carcinogen (cancer causing) - there is no safe level of exposure.
  • Secondhand smoke contains over 4000 chemicals; cyanide, arsenic, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and ammonia.
  • Secondhand smoke causes burning eyes and nasal passages, headaches, nausea and discomfort to non-smokers and can aggravate the condition of persons with allergies or asthma.
  • Current ventilation standards only remove odors. They do not remove carcinogens or health risks. Separate areas do not eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Employees are exposed to secondhand smoke and may not have the option of changing jobs to protect their health.
