Education and Training

Education and Training:

The School Health Consultant provides a variety of education and training for students, parents, and school staff.

Puberty/Maturity Education: The School Health Consultant provides an overview of changes associated with puberty to 4th and 5th grade female students.  The program materials used are from Proctor and Gamble “Always Changing.”  The videos used are available for viewing at the link below.  Parents are welcome to preview the materials, join their child for the presentation, or exclude their child from the presentation.  Supply kits are provided to both male and female students with an informational brochure and a few products associated with puberty, such as deodorant, a toothbrush, and (females only) feminine napkins.

Standard Precautions/Bloodborne Pathogens Training: Standard Precautions training is mandated annually for school staff.  The SHC will provide an online training course that meets the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for school employees to utilize in order to meet this requirement.

Medication Administration: Medication administration training is required for school staff who deliver medications to students.  This certification course allows non-medical staff to administer medications to students in Iowa schools.  It is a combination of interactive visual learning and hands-on skills training.  The School Health Consultant provides this training to school staff upon request.

Parent Education: The School Health Consultant provides education to parents as requested.  This may include individual education in regards to specific health concerns or group education as needed.

Classroom Education: Opportunities for classroom health related topics include hand washing, dental hygiene, and tobacco awareness.  Additionally, the School Health Consultant may link schools to outside resources for health related topics.
