The Wapsi River Environmental Education Center is located along the Wapsipinicon River and consists of 225 acres of upland and bottomland forests, grasslands, and wetlands. The Wapsi Center, along with Sherman Park across the river, provide a 432-acre complex offering a wide variety of uses.

Center Goals

The Wapsi River Environmental Education Center provides multiple uses, with an emphasis on resource protection and environmental education. Specific goals include:

  • protection of existing natural resources
  • a comprehensive environmental education program
  • providing limited outdoor recreation
  • providing public access to the Wapsipinicon River
  • managing the area to provide diverse wildlife habitat
  • development of a Wapsipinicon River Greenbelt

You Can Help!

Are you a school teacher or a member of a civic organization that is looking for a community project? Please consider the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center. The Center has a constant need for supplies and equipment.

The Friends of the Wapsi Center is a citizens' support group providing assistance to the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center in the form of volunteers for programs, technical assistance, curriculum planning, financial support, and guidance in fulfilling the Center's goals.

Project Partners

The Wapsi Center is managed and operated by Scott County Conservation. The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation and QCCA helped with the original purchase of the property and fund raising.

REGISTRATION IS NOW FULL FOR THIS EVENT

Join Director/Naturalist Dave Murcia for an adventure with kayaks. Whether you are a beginner or regular paddler, come out to learn basics. Program includes all equipment use, covers safety, techniques, and taking a tour of Lake of the Hills. You may bring your own vessel/PFD, though it must comply with IADNR regulations. Reminder - this program is determined by weather and site conditions, weight capacity loads are 250-300 lbs./solo and 425-475 lbs./ tandem. Dress appropriately and bring water

The August 21st Forum will feature Jason Steele

Jason Steele is the Area Resource Soil Scientist for 20 counties in Southeast Iowa.  He is versed in soils related information and a local expert on Soil health and Cover crops. He has work in the realm of soils for over 17 years and has a variety of soil related jobs within the agency.

Jason is also a landowner and practices good conservation practices including soil health on his own land. He will speak on soil health and its impacts on water quality and crop production.

Saturday, August 25, 2018 - 10:00am

Join Naturalist Becky Baugh for a workshop on monarch butterflies! During this program, participants will learn about monarch butterflies and why their population is declining. We will help the monarchs by making seed bombs which you will take home with you at the end of the program. We will also take a hike to the prairie and catch monarch butterflies to collect data for Project Monarch Health and Monarch Watch. It will be family fun for everyone!

Man and woman are a 2 person team and play 9 holes in an alternate shot format and scored using a modified stable ford scoring system. The event is flighted by the number of teams signed up each night. Men play from the white tees and women play from the red tees. Cost (subject to change) is $55.00 per couple and includes green fee, cart fee, prizes and a cookout after play. This is intended to be a fun night and beginners are encouraged to participate.
