Life Skills Training (LST)
Classroom-based program focusing on giving student the motivation and skills to resist peer and media pressure to use tobacco. Designed as a 3 year sequence it requires a two-day training for teacher or others implementing the program.
Grades 6-9
Media Sharp
School-based modules (5) that can be integrated into existing curricula. Emphasizes critical thinking, and consumer skills by highlighting how media glamorizes and validates unhealthy lifestyles. No training costs associated with the program.
Youth ages 11-14
Project ALERT
Classroom-based program with 14 lesson (11/3) over a two year period where students learn to recognize and resist the pressures (peer and commercial ) to smoke. Emphasizes role-playing and video illustrations of real life situations. Teachers implementing the program are trained.
Middle Grade students
Project T.N.T. (Towards No Tobacco-Use)
Classroom-based program with 12 lessons over a two year period (10/2) focusing on building student refusal skills.
Teaching methods involve small and large group discussion, role playing and projects. Teachers are trained.
Grades 7-8
Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU)
School based program where trained adults (generally volunteers) train high school students to present on tobacco prevention to younger children.

Presentations/Supplemental Activities
Tar Wars
In School Program delivered by health professional (1 hour session ) followed by follow up activities including a poster contest.
5th Grade U.S. Students
Science Tobacco and You
A technology-based curriculum package with interactive resources designed to help students understand the harmful effects of smoking and build their skills for refusal and resistance. No training costs are associated with the program.
Grades 4-5
Making Healthy Choices
Program for pre-school to 6th grade.
Pre-school to 6th grade
Operation Storefront
Project-based activity where students engage in a community level survey of tobacco related products. To be used as a follow-up or compliment to curricula or presentations.
Middle and high school students
The Programs labeled "Classroom/School-based/ Curricular Programs" address the target population and have a research base and documented effectiveness. They should be the centerpiece of the work carried out the year. The programs labeled "Presentation/Supplemental activities" should be used to support and supplement the core programs.
