Online orders require a primary phone number and e-mail address in order to communicate the status of your order. You will be notified via e-mail, text, or phone call whether your application has been approved or denied. If approved, you will be required to come in person to the Sheriff’s Office at the Scott County Courthouse, 400 W. 4th Street, Davenport, Iowa to show your valid state issued photo identification and supporting training documentation from a class from an NRA Instructor or a long form DD214 that states Honorable Discharge. As required by the State of Iowa, you must provide training documentation to receive a permit to carry a weapon. You are able to scan and submit your documentation online; you must still bring it with you for inspection. Everyone applying for a permit is subjected to a background check through NICS, which everyone must pass. You can use your non-professional permit as a purchase permit. For Permits to Carry the Sheriff’s Office will refund $40.00 if the applicant is denied.

You may apply in-person at the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at the Scott County Courthouse, 400 W. 4th Street, Davenport, Iowa. There is a kiosk in the lobby for people to apply online in person at the Sheriff’s Office.

A non-professional permit is valid for five (5) years. You need to renew your permit at least thirty (30) days before it expires.

DO I NEED TO FILL OUT THE NEW GUN PERMIT APPLICATION OR RENEWAL APPLICATION?

Answer these questions to figure out if you are qualified for a Renewal or if you should fill out the New Application

  1. Have I had a carry permit since 2011?
  2. Have I taken a Refresher Course or Qualified, with an instructor, at the range, in the last year that my carry permit has been valid?
  3. Am I submitting my application at least 30 days prior to the expiration date on the back of my permit, but not more than 12 months before the expiration date?

If you have answered YES to all of the above questions, you qualify for a Renewal.

If you have answered NO to any of the above questions, you do not qualify for a Renewal. You must fill out the New Application, and your prior training can be used again.
