The Antoine LeClaire House
Hands on involvement in the restoration of the historic Antoine LeClaire House Historical Interpretive Center has been a priority of the SCHPS in partnership with the City of Davenport which acquired the Italianate mansion as a Bicentennial project in 1976.
Antoine LeClaire was the prime founder of the City of Davenport and a moving force in opening the frontier west of the Mississippi River to settlement. He funded schools, churches, public buildings parks and industry, as well as donated the square of land the Scott County Courthouse stands on today.
The LeClaire House Center will serve as a dissemination point for information on local historic sites and tours, as a location for community meetings and programs and as a catalyst for neighborhood renewal.
SCHPS members have enthusiastically worked on not only grant-writing and fundraising but also have volunteered as tour guides and provided labor for yard work, paint removal, repainting and numerous other restoration efforts.
As of 1997, the we have assisted in raising over $627,000 for this project.
