RE: Scott County Residents Encouraged to Participate in Cancer Survey

The Scott County Health Department is encouraging Scott County residents to go on-line and be a part of a unique cancer study being conducted by the Marin County Cancer Project and the University of California, San Francisco. To participate in the research, log on to the Health Department's website at and follow the link to the survey.

Scott County has been identified as a peer county to Marin County, California. In an effort to determine why Marin County continues to be significantly higher than the national average for all cancers, residents of 33 peer counties across the nation are being asked to complete the on-line survey. The survey is approximately 25-30 questions and takes 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous and includes questions related to demographic, environmental, genetic, lifestyle, and migratory characteristics. Residents of Marin County are completing the same survey and then the data will be analyzed to better understand the factors that may explain Marin's high cancer rates. The researchers will also provide county-specific information to the participating peer counties.

The Marin Cancer Project is a grassroots organization founded in 2002. Its mission is to educate the community about known and suspected causes of cancer to ensure the health and wellbeing of residents. The Project has raised over $300,000 from the community to conduct this research.
