Re: Scott County Health Department Offers Flu Vaccinations for Children
The 2003-04 influenza season is just around the corner. This year the Scott County Health Department is offering Pediatric Influenza (flu) vaccine for infants 6 months of age to adolescents 18 years of age. The Scott County Health Department received a limited number of doses of flu vaccine for children from the Iowa Department of Public Health.
The Scott County Health Department began giving the flu vaccinations for children last week and will continue until the supply is depleted. Since children who have never received the flu vaccine require two doses one month apart, it is important to get the series started soon. Children who received flu vaccine last year will only need one dose.
Studies have shown that flu or flu related illness is the number one reason for hospitalization of infants and children during the winter months. According to the Centers for Disease Control, small children less than two years old are as likely as those over 65 to have to be hospitalized because of the flu. It is also a leading reason why parents miss work during flu season.
Parents interested in getting their children vaccinated may contact the Scott County Health Department at 326-8618 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to arrange for the vaccination.
