Restitution, Community Service & Fines

Scott County imposes fines, community service, and restitution.

Fines are commonly levied in most cases in which the court imposes a non-institutional sanction. In addition, the court charges a variety of fees and costs paid by the defendant. The amount of fines collected has increased 29% from FY 96-97 - FY 99-2000.

Community service is routinely offered as an alternative to fines. In the Court Compliance program, the program offers and finally determines if the fine should be converted to community service. The community service program is operated under a contract with Scott County.

Restitution is collected by the Clerk of Courts when ordered by the Court. Restitution is over and above the amount of fines and costs. In FY 2000-2001, more than $1.4 million dollars in restitution was ordered. As of August 7, 2001, $518,614 (36%) had been paid.
